Constanța at the Center of Romania–India Relations: First Visit of H.E. Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohapatra and Strategic Meetings with the Local Business Community

The Mayor of Constanța, Vergil Chițac, officially welcomed a delegation led by His Excellency Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohapatra, Ambassador of the Republic of India to Romania, on his first visit to Constanța since assuming his diplomatic mandate.

The meeting with the local business community took place as part of the official program, with H.E. Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohapatra accompanied by Alin Marius Albu, Vice President of the Bilateral Chamber of Commerce Romania–India (UBCCRI), along with UBCCRI members Corneliu-Răzvan Idu, Dorin Mihai Lazia, and Neicu Traian. Discussions focused on concrete opportunities for investment and bilateral cooperation in strategic sectors such as infrastructure, green energy (solar, wind, and geothermal), freight flow management, digitalization, education, the pharmaceutical industry, and defense.

“Constanța is not just a city, not just a port – it is Romania’s gateway to the world, a bridge between geopolitical regions, a strategic city on NATO’s southeastern flank and at the eastern border of the European Union. Constanța offers outstanding opportunities for investment. Your presence in our city, exactly one month after taking office, demonstrates India’s interest – and that of your country’s business community – in developing joint projects with the city and county of Constanța. In this context, we assure you of our full support in implementing such projects,” stated Mayor Vergil Chițac.

H.E. Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohapatra highlighted the economic potential of the region and expressed his commitment to being “actively involved in the planned cooperation projects,” emphasizing investments in renewable energy, education, and technological innovation.

The visit was part of a broader program held between 2–6 August 2025, which included meetings with institutions, companies, and local authorities:

  • 4 August – Constanța Maritime University, Constanța City Hall, Mangalia Military Shipyard, followed by a dinner with the Indian diaspora.
  • 5 August – Constanța Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Shipping and Agriculture (CCINA), Constanța Shipyard, DP World, Comvex, and Alezzi.
  • 6 August – Năvodari City Hall, Midia, Axxis/Rig Service, and Rompetrol Oil Terminal.

During the same period, H.E. Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohapatra held a separate meeting with Picoiu Adrian Teodor, Prefect of Constanța County, to discuss institutional support for bilateral economic projects and cooperation between India and Constanța County.

This event comes shortly after the July visit of a UBCCRI delegation led by Shiva Munjal (President) and Alin Marius Albu (Vice President), during which the intention to open a UBCCRI office in Constanța was announced, aimed at facilitating bilateral economic relations.
